Installation

Installing removable bollard sleeves

The part of a removable bollard that gets installed is the sleeve: a receiver set flush in concrete. The post drops in and locks; take it out and the lane is clear, with nothing to trip on.

Before anyone digs or cores, get a utility locate. In Ontario that’s Ontario One Call; every province has an equivalent. A slab can hide conduit, radiant heat or post-tension cables: scan it before coring.

Getting it right

  • Set the sleeve flush with the finished surface, so ploughs and wheels ride over it when the post is out.
  • Give it drainage or a sealed cap: a sleeve that fills with water freezes solid, and the post won’t go back in until spring.
  • For a rated removable, the sleeve is installed to the maker’s drawing; the rating covers the post and the fitting together.
  • Plan where the posts live when they’re out, and who has the key.
